Haz Mat spill closes Edheboro Road:

11/28/2006     12:20 AM

At approximately 12:20 am, on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, employees of Yellow Freight discovered a drum filled with a chemical substance leaking on a tractor trailer. The owner of the trailer was unknown at the time of this report. They notified police and fire services to respond. The leak was confirmed by responding units and the Middlesex County Hazardous Materials Unit was notified to respond. As the substance leaked out of the truck, it reacted with the concrete apron the trailer was parked on, causing a vaporous cloud. Because of the vapor, officials from the East Brunswick Independent Fire Company and County and East Brunswick Offices of Emergency Management decided to order all overnight businesses in the area to shelter in place. However, no evacuation was necessary. The air in the area was monitored by Hazardous Materials personnel and representatives of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. No health hazards were detected in the air. Edgeboro Road was also closed to all motor vehicle traffic. Due to the location of the leaking drum on the trailer, responders had a difficult time confirming the substance that was leaking. Access was eventually gained to the affected drum and the substance was identified as 3-DIMETHYLAMINOPROPYLAMINE, a substance used in the production of textiles. The leak was contained and the situation under control at approximately 6 am, and the roadway was reopened at approximately 6:30 am. There were no injuries reported. The cause of the leak in currently under investigation. The agencies that responded to the incident included the East Brunswick Independent Fire Company, the East Brunswick Police Department, South Old Bridge Fire Hazardous Materials Unit, Middlesex County Hazardous Materials Unit, East Brunswick Rescue Squad, Milltown Rescue Squad, Robert Wood Johnson Paramedics, Middlesex County and East Brunswick Township Offices of Emergency Management, South River Police Department and Office of Emergency Management, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
