The Operations Division is comprised of the Patrol Section and the Traffic Section. Also incorporated into the ranks of the Operations Division is the Department's SWAT Team, which utilizes officers from the various divisions to respond to situations that require specific technical skills. Participation is voluntary and requires that all these dedicated officers undergo rigorous training and maintain the ability to demonstrate strong, functional knowledge of their expertise to achieve unit objectives.
Patrol Section:
The Patrol Section is often referred to as the "backbone" of a police department. Its fundamental responsibilities include handling all emergencies, daily service calls and insuring public safety seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. The East Brunswick Police Department's Patrol Section handles these tasks while maintaining the distinctive philosophy of proactive policing. Mobile patrols are highly visible and target specific problems or criminal trends within the boundaries of the Township. This analytical style of policing is efficient and results in the preservation of the high quality of life that the residents and businesses of East Brunswick have grown to expect. The highly successful DWI Unit of the East Brunswick Police is also within the Patrol Section.
The Patrol Section is structured with three platoons of uniformed officers. Each platoon is comprised of supervisors, a contingent of patrolmen, and communication dispatchers. The number of patrolmen and dispatchers vary depending on the workload of the particular shift.
The Patrol Section follows a strict chain-of-command.
Traffic Section:
The Traffic Section is comprised of seven patrolmen, a sergeant, an executive secretary and a part-time secretary. Also assigned to the division are two traffic maintenance workers, 36 school crossing guards and one special officer.
The responsibilities of the Traffic Section are numerous and diverse. Officers' duties vary from assisting with school bus evacuation drills to investigating serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents within the township. Officers investigate an array of complaints that include view obstructions, missing street signs, speeding complaints, abandoned vehicles and traffic flow concerns. Officers are frequently utilized to handle patrol duties. Several traffic officers are assigned to the Fatal Accident Reconstruction Team. They receive special training and are called upon to investigate all serious and fatal accidents.
The East Brunswick Police Motorcycle Unit is made up of two officers and one sergeant from the Traffic Division. Weather permitting, Harley Davidson motorcycles are operated while performing their traffic duties, and used frequently for funeral details.
